Southern women were submissive to their husbands; they did what was expected of them. That's not to say there weren't exceptions to the rule, but on the whole they turned a blind eye and dealt with was needed..... often times they found themselves in situation where their treatment of the slaves was based on taking out their anger with the men on their slaves..... just because they could.
