How did Hester and Lloyd Ned feel about eachother, and where did each of them live?

Ned Roberts was a young man who payed attention to Hester. Hester belonged to another master who forbid her to see Ned. It isn't elaborated on, in chapter 1, if the two were actually in love. Hester would have had to meet Ned somewhere secret to see him.
