These white men began to feel that slaves were competing with them for jobs one day all four of them came upon him and beat him terribly. Douglass came home and told Master Hugh; to his surprise, both Master Hugh and his wife were furious at the harm done to Douglass. Master Hugh tried to take care of it but realized that no white man would testify on Douglass's behalf.
