Did the mistress's initial kindness or her eventual cruelty have a greater effect on Fredrick Douglass?

The mistress' initial kindness opened Douglass' mind to possibilities..... her kindness provided him with a goal..... something to work for. As a woman, she was a disappointment, but the gift she opened and then tried to take away couldn't be rescinded.
