Covey is a bully; he believes that the only way a man has power is to physically and emotionally break his opponent. He is prideful and arrogant, and he works in his profession because it gives him a fantastic income. He has no empathy for people and thinks only of himself. He feels justified in his actions.

Douglass is already a broken man, and his altercation with Covey, combined with his own inner strength make him the more determined of the two. If Douglass were like Mr. Covey or acted in the same way he would be dead. But think about it....... it is Douglass' determination and self control that insure his future.
