How does Douglass find the strength to hope and plan for his escape?

I think that it is Douglass's fight with Covey that renews his desire to be a free man. After two hours of fighting, Douglas prevails over Covey. Douglas feels it is possible to win against the odds; he thinks escape and freedom can happen.
