Achilles left the battle because he was forced to return the beautiful, young woman he'd taken as a prize of war. Agamemnon demanded the woman, and as a result, Achilles withdrew. Achilles rejoined the battle in order to avenge the death of his closest friend, Patroclus, who was killed by Hector.
