Why is Mr. Shimerda so happy to have made the acquaintance of Peter and Pavel?

Peter and Pavel speak Mr. Shimerda's language, and they are able to talk with him about Russia (the old country). The men make him feel more at ease in his new country. This is very important to Mr. Shimerda.
