In his homeland, Mr. Shimerda was a weaver and a musician. He was an artist and he was happy. Older, frail and thin, Mr. Shimerda knew next to nothing about farming. He knew little English and was swindled by thieves and unscrupulous countryman. They lived in what was really a cave and had little to show for all their toil. Mr.Shimerda was deeply homesick and felt like a failure.
