Time or the passage of time is important in this story. The iconic clock hence represents this. As the hourly chime plays out, it signals and the passage of time culminating in death. Many of the main characters evaluate their lives as Big Ben chimes out hour after hour. While the characters live and evaluate their lives (they are no longer young) the clock seems a temporal reminder that time is ticking away.
