The party very much reflects what drives Clarissa. Her preoccupations (which happen to be the themes of this story) are put on hiatus' Clarissa loves hosing a party. . Her choices in life, her mortality, her choice of suitor....are all put on hold. In many ways the party enables Clarissa to avoid these questions in her life and bask in the illusions a party brings.
