Why was Wes, David’s dad, a sheriff instead of an attorney? What does this show about Wesley’s relationship to his own father?

Wesley graduated from law school, and his wife Gail insists he would be happier practicing law than being the sheriff. I think Wes wanted to please other people like his grandfather and father rather that follow his passion.
