Montana 1948

On page 78, David says that he " knew immediately what had happened" what does he know? How does he know it? What's the symbolic significance of the open medical bag on the table on page 78?

David knows that Marie has died. He sees the car from Unsed's in the drive way. That can only mean one thing. I think the Uncle Frank's medical bag is more ironic than symbolic considering Uncle Frank was responsible for her death.
