How is this gun different from the guns david's father has given him and trained him to use? Is it significant that it comes from his grandfather?

This gun is a repeating gun. I think the gun represents Grandfather's more violent nature or at least his insensitivities to life. He tells David to kill coyotes with it. David ends up killing a magpie.
