Steve's tone is hopeful.... though he feels ignored and unseen during the trial proceedings, he is also bolstered by Sunsets interest in his screenplay.

The discussion about termites serves to illustrate the unimportance of the trial itself. Rather than discussing the case, the officers discuss the mundane.
