I think that Steve senses white privilege in his attorney. Her life is nothing like the struggles he faces. There is a definite juxtaposition of race here. After she shares with him some personal details, Steve provides commentary that highlights the difference between her expectations from life and his: “It sounded like a good life even though she said it like it was nothing special”
