Monkey is an allegory. You might want to approach your essay in a way where you take the novels main characters (earthly and divine), and discuss how the aspects of ancient Chinese society are reflected in the novel's allegory: government, parental relations, religion, etc. You might also include the plurality of Chinese religions and philosophies.
