is clarin in La vida es sueño really crippled?

I'm doing a project on spanish rennacance theatre and were acting out a play scene from the play life is a dream or La vida es sueño. Clarin is in the tower at act 3 scene 2 and he plays along to the soldiers calling him king and hes like; "I can't give them, as i want them for myself. For a prince to be cripple would be rather a defect.". Does he mean that he really is cripple, that he waers a chain on his legs, or something else? Help need to know now! -Jess, the nerd now
