Stubb is the second mate of the voyage, a native of Cape Cod and a happy-go-lucky man. He is good-humored, easy and careless. There is no telling what he thought of death, and Ishmael wonders how he can remain so easy-going and unfearing. Ishmael attributes it in part to his smoking pipe.
