What has happened to Pip?

Pip is assigned duty as an oarsman when one of the men is injured. He has never served in this capacity, and his first encounter with a whale causes him to jump into the ocean. Stubbs quickly pulls him back into the boat, and Pip promptly jumps back in...... this time he is left behind. The time Pip spends in the water drives him crazy, and he is ultimately rescued by chance.
