The court room is filled with about 300 people who constitute the "mob" that Hiram and Grampa Hillburn expect to see.  The jury selection is typical of the times; only those registered to vote can be considered for jury service and most blacks have been unable to register because of the difficulty in registering.  Ultimately twelve white men are empaneled and the trial is dismissed for that day.
