Hiram's father and his grandfather's relationship is compared to that of Hitler and Roosevelt. This conflict is crucial as it heavily dependent on the fact that ever since coming home from World War II, Hiram's father has viewed his hometown of Greenwood, Mississippi and much of the southern United States as extremely prejudiced. He also views the close knit relationship between his own father and Hiram as something negative.
