Egeus is angry that his daughter Hermia refuses to marry his choice of Demetrius. Instead she is in love with Lysander. Egeus wants Theseus to rule that Hermia must marry Demetrius or face death.

Egeus brings Lysander, Demetrius, and Hermia to Theseus in Act I, scene 1 to "beg the ancient privilege of Athens" which is to have death upon Hermia for being a disobedient child. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius and she has refused because she is in love with Lysander and vice versa.
