Shakespeare uses a play within a play often, to explain a concept, to trick a character (in Hamlet) or to learn something about characters (also Hamlet). Shakespeare always has a purpose for such a play, so you must decide for yourself what that purpose is. It is not intended to be an "addition" or a distraction; it is integral to the meaning of the play.
