Apollo wanted to marry Daphne who ran away from him. her father changed her form; she became a laurel tree. Apollo embraced her new form, but was unable to hold her, even her branches shrank away from her. To take her to wife was no longer an option, so Apollo vowed to take care of her as his tree; her leaves were then used as crowns and also used as decorations on weapons. It is said that the leaves of a laurel tree never decay because Apollo gifted them with immortality because of his lost love.
