What was Elizabethan popular belief about holy men about to die? What do you think about such a belief?

Nerissa explains that, "holy men at their death have good inspirations". It was thought that good men have some sort of prophetic gift near their death hence Portia's father's inspiration to have the casket test. I'm thinking this is merely superstition.
