Merchant of Venice

Much of this play has to do with Christian vs. Jewish standards of morality. What takes precedence in Venetian law, where commerce is king?

Contract law takes precedence in Venice where commerce is king. The contract between Antonio and Shylock is a contract, and unless there is mercy (which is not in any contract), Antonio will have to give up his pound of flesh.

Shylock and Antonio have made an agreement. Such an agreement is "legal"; therefore, the terms of the law would be enforced. Law is often neither of one morality or another; it is simply the law. While the Jews have typically been "put down," we might assume that Christian morality would be more likely to be enforced. However, the concept of "fairness" would go through all moralities and fairness would apply, in this case meaning what would be fair as agreed upon by the two parties.
