Shylock is a rich Jewish moneylender in Venice. He is the play's antagonist. Shylock is characterized as greedy, unrelenting, and unmerciful. Shylock admittedly despises Antonio because he is a Christian; "I hate him for he is a Christian" (Act I, Scene III). He also hates Antonio because he competes with his business..... Antonio provides interest free loans. In essence, Shylock's actions are for the most part an act of revenge.
