Why does Art choose to only show one real photograph from the war? What impact does this have on the reader?

Photos are not used in graphic novels. Spiegelman chose to include a photograph of his father dressed in his prison uniform, in order to remind us that behind the metaphor stands a real man, and that man was Vladek, his father.
