When the war ends, Vladek is not immediately freed. Why not? Why didn’t the German soldiers surrender?

The Germans held the prisoners and continued to fight. Vladek and other prisoners were forced to accompany them, as they moved across the country. The Germans were hastily moving away, as the American troops moved ever closer.
