"And Here My Trouble's Began." These words symbolize Vladek's loss of his wife, but they also symbolize Art's feelings about his father. Throughout this chapter, Vladek displays behaviors that embarrass his son. His father was a Jew in the Holocaust, who later displays racist behaviors when Art picks up an African American hitchhiker.

According to the novel, "His prejudice originates from his first few days in New York after the war; he says that blacks would steal his belongings if he left them unattended."
