Vladek says of the hanging, “ I was frightened to go outside for a few days…I didn’t want to pass where they were hanging. And maybe one of them could have talked of me to the Germans to try to save himself.” Certainly Vladek is both haunted by the thought of the dead people and paranoid of suffering a similar fate.
