1.Why was Vladek's father so reluctant to let him serve in the Polish army? What means did he use to keep him out?

Vladek´s father didn´t want his children to go to the army because of his own experience in the Rusian army. Vladek's father wouldn't let Vladek eat or sleep, he starved Vladek so the army wouldn't want to use him.
