Best Answer: Mala is helping Art to rummage through his father's things in search of Anya's diaries. The father and son do not have a close relationship, but this is changing as Art makes discoveries that assist him in understanding who his father really is. I believe that Mala's comment comes from the care in which Vladek has saved all of his calendars, brochures, and keepsakes, and the care he doesn't give to forging a relationship with his son.

Maybe because Mala and Vladek don't have such a close relationship. She might feel that he cares about Anja much more than her. He doesn't have a good relationship with his son either, but he keeps calendars and stationary closer to him then his own son. Thats pretty sad considering your son should be a person you love and cherish.
