Strong answers will reference the patriarchal tendencies of the apartheid system and suggest that perhaps female figures of importance were not typical topics of study in school. Because Sam receives most of his book learning from Hally, it makes sense that he would also be limited in his knowledge about women of magnitude. Superior responses would point out the only famous female Sam and Hally discuss, Joan of Arc, was persecuted and killed for her efforts, unlike most of her male counterparts.
