Marcovaldo: or The Seasons in the City Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Rabbit (Symbol)

A little rabbit, found by Marcovaldo, is a symbol of nature and Marcovaldo’s attitude to it. He was happy to have this little creature in his home and loved it very much. He doesn’t care that he may not have his dinner because they didn’t have money to buy anything. This rabbit could be their dinner but Marcovaldo would rather die than let this cute living creature be killed for food. The rabbit also is an embodiment of fear and kindness, these two characteristics also suit for Marcovaldo, so they both have much in common and Marcovaldo feels this ties so he will never let anyone abuse it.

GNAC (Symbol)

The GNAC was a part of the neon sign SPAAK COGNAC on the roof opposite Marcovaldo’s windows, which shone for twenty seconds then went off for twenty, and when it was lighted so that you couldn't see anything else. It is a vivid symbol of a city. It is bright, artificial and brings more problems than use. Marcovaldo hated it sign, but he couldn’t move out or move this sign so there was nothing left for him but to adjust to it. It is one of realities of life in the big city – no one cares if you like it or not, money is more important that people.

Loneliness (Motif)

Marcovaldo wanders the streets in search of something, but he doesn’t know exactly what he is looking for. All these adventure that happened to him, mostly failures, taught him nothing. He remained the same guy who loves nature and hates city. He felt lonely in big crowded place because it wasn’t the right place for him and it made him suffer. Each his action was an attempt to do something useful for other people, but every time he made only worse, he longed people understand him but, actually, they never did.
