Why does Malcolm test macduff?

In act 4 Malcolm figures that MacDuff is a good guy but is still suspicious because he fled from Macbeth. Even though Macbeth is supposed to be the devil incarnate, he is still king and loyalty is a big deal. Malcolm puts Macduff through this rather silly test to test how loyal Macduff might be to him.
