I thought the murder of Banquo was worse. Banquo was Macbeth's good friend and partner on battle. Macbeth also meant to kill Banquo's son Fleance at the same time. Elizabethans would have considered the death of Duncan to be the most grievous in nature. They felt that God had anointed the King to be in power.
