Lady Macbeth is walking and talking in her sleep, which disturbs her ladies, as she utters words they dare not repeat. She washes her hands over and over again, and will not lay down without a light at her bedside. The doctor is summoned and witnesses her actions, her desire to wash the blood from her hands, and he acknowledges he cannot help her. The doctor says she does not need his services, but rather the services of a priest.
