Macbeth

What proclamation does Duncan make about his son in lines 39-49? How does this announcement create tension in the play?

Duncan proclaims that he is bestowing his kingdom on his oldest son, Malcolm. This creates tension because Macbeth thought to have the position bestowed upon himself, and the appointment puts that into question. Kings did not inherit the throne during this period, they were appointed (elected). Thus, Malcolm will be a problem.
