King Duncan has come to visit the outskirts of the battle with his son Malcolm. They would still be in Scotland. The mood seems pretty happy except for the captain who is like no arm left. The captain is reporting that Macbeth and Banquo were like fighting machines and beat the tar out of the Norwegians. The scene is meant to introduce Macbeth's reputation and display all that he is going to lose.
