They are really there to mess with Macbeth. Chaos and disorder was the name of their game. They use powers of manipulation by suggesting what Macbeth might like to hear with any meaning hidden in vague riddle-like prophesies to drive Macbeth mad. Witches just liked doing things like that, they were evil!
