You have most likely moved on from this question but perhaps "better late than never" might help someone else. After the witches show up, things begin to change quickly. Characters adapt in their own way. Macbeth adapts by distancing himself from L. Macbeth. He puts on his big boy pants and buys a one way ticket to paranoid psycho town. Lady Macbeth switches roles from dominant to subordinate with her husband. Macduff and Malcolm adapt by taking matters into his own hands and seeking a more "civilized" England's help. Ross adapts by playing both sides until he can figure out which one will come out on top.
