Macbeth

Macbeth

The first words Macbeth utters in the play echo a line already spoken (I.iii.38). What significant effect does Shakespeare create through this device?

Macbeth says, So foul and fair a day I have not seen. The effect of this paradox comes courtesy of Shakespeare's constant use of equivocation. Shakespeare illustrates the constant dichotomy of darkness and light, the good and the bad forever coming together to make things not what they might seem.
