Elizabethans believed that the witches were evil. Shakespeare indulges them with unattractive ladies that look as if they could be men. They only show up in the dark and the weather is often stormy. They call on sprits that are not Christian and speak in strange riddles. They make evil potions from parts considered unholy by Elizabethans of the time.
