The poem starts off witch revealing how a young bird-catcher is experiencing unrequited love for the squires daughter, a being of higher station than himself. He attempts to show her his love by freeing "imprisoned larks", perhaps to symbolize the bird-catcher himself freeing himself of the burden of his love. However, this is lost on the squire's daughter as she ignores the birds and simply rides past.
