One example is Sponilli's description of the old lady in chapter 21:

She is the color of white mice: pink scalp showing through white hair, pink eyelids. Her eyes are watery, but she is not crying.

Another use of clever language is in chapter 22:

On these days he does not seem to notice other people. His eyes are focused on the Beyond—certainly not the Beyonds of Binns or the Oh Mailman Lady—most likely the Golden Beyond of Olympic Glory
