Why does Ralph want to join Jack’s group? Does this surprise you?

Jack's group is an easy way out. It offers security and friendship. It relieves him of the stresses of leadership.

No this doesn't surprise me. Ralph is a boy contending with unimaginable stresses. Kids seek to belong; they long for security. Although Ralph stands for completely different values, the security of Jack's group is certainly tempting.
