Ralph likes to be in power, and he is adept at choosing strategies that make him seem strong and sure footed. Choosing the easy path allows him to look sure of himself, even if he isn't. The easy path assures that his nerves won't be as apparent. He wants to be a good leader, and he wants to be looked up to, but he isn't sure enough of himself to simply step up and be the leader he's like to be.
