Why couldn't Jack kill the pig?

Jack wasn't ready to kill.... to take a life. He wanted to, but he couldn't. A part of him still followed a moral code.

They knew very well why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood.
